I was going to put up another recipe today, which I may still do later today but I just HAD to share this because it makes me sick to my stomach, and I think you all should know about it. I read today about the Center for Science in the Public Interest’s “Xtreme Eating Awards” list for 2013 and wanted to talk about some things that have been weighing on my mind lately.
“Crispy battered shrimp, fresh mushrooms, tomato and arugula tossed with spaghettini and a basil-garlic-lemon cream sauce.” Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Not so much to “new” me, but old me would have devoured that! This is the menu explanation for The Cheesecake Factory’s Bistro Shrimp Pasta.
Would you still order it if you knew that it comes in at a whopping 3,120 calories?!?! And that it has 89 grams of saturated fat? And I don’t mean the good kind that you can get from grass-fed, pastured, and cage-free protein sources. 89 grams guys. Based on what I think I consume (around 1600 calories per day?) it is recommended that I do not ingest more than 14 grams of saturated fat in a day…. So, this meal would provide me enough saturated fat for almost an ENTIRE WEEK (6.35 days)
I don’t know about you but this makes me so sad for our country’s future. Yeah, I may be sort of melodramatic, but this is HAPPENING every day and nothing about it is changing. I calculated how many ounces of 100% organic, grass-fed ribeye I would have to eat in order to get to that amount of calories or saturated fat. Pretty incredible if you ask me:
– I would have to eat 65 ounces of ribeye in order to reach 3,120 calories.
What’s MORE crazy is how much I would have to eat in order to reach 89 grams of saturated fat:
– 89 ounces of ribeye…
I typically eat around 6-8 ounces of steak when I do choose to have it, so I would have to eat 11-14 Rachael sized servings to get the same amount of fat.
What really gets me about this is that no one cares. Really. A lot of my family and friends just would rather just not know what they are putting into their body. I can’t deal with that. Everyone gets exactly one body. Just one. So, shouldn’t we take the very best care of it as possible? I like to think of it this way…
If you were given a beautiful, state-of-the-art, powerful car and when you received it they said this is the ONLY car you will ever own. Would you fill the gas tank with garbage? Would you just say “meh” I’ll put whatever I can find in there and hope for the best! I bet it would run like shit. AND I bet it wouldn’t last that long. So, why would we do the same with our BODIES? I don’t understand.
I know I am being a little soap-boxy and preachy, but you really truly need to do better. I really truly need to do better too! We are all in the same boat with our ONE body and all we can do is take care of it. Yes, pasta with deep-fried shrimp and creamy sauce is delicious.
I will not argue with you.
BUT is almost a weeks worth of saturated fat (not the good kind) really worth it? Personally I would rather eat an 8 oz ribeye steak for dinner for an entire week and I would STILL be doing better than the one meal at The Cheesecake Factory.
I love you and I want you around (even if I don’t know you!) So try to care more, and learn more about what you put into that wonderful, one-of-a-kind body you were blessed with!
